Bad Religion’s Christmas Songs

I love Christmas music. Every year I get a new Christmas album to increase my collection. Sometimes they are good. Sometimes they are just awful. I saw that Bad Religion released a Christmas album, appropriately titled Christmas Songs, and I had to check it out. I am not the hugest punk fan, but I really respect and enjoy Bad Religion. I thought it was odd that they recorded a Christmas album since that is not very punk and they are definitely not a Christian band. With their ability to play a strong melody and Greg Gaffin’s appreciation of harmony their musical style fits the seasonal classics quite well. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I found out that they are regulars on KROQs Almost Acoustic Christmas concert, so I shouldn’t have been surprised that they perform Christmas songs. This is a short EP that they released in 2013 and is only 20 minutes in length. They do 8 covers of traditional Christmas songs and then a new mix of their “American Jesus” song from their 1993 album Recipe for Hate. If you are a fan of modern Christmas covers I recommend checking out this short album.

If you like the original “American Jesus” I also recommend checking out the version on this album. It is mixed very well, and I enjoy it more than the original.

I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. It will be sad to retire my Christmas music for another 11 months, but Happy New Year!
